Finally read (listened to) this classic. For readers unfamiliar with the Napoleonic Wars, especially the events around the time of Waterloo, the beginning text is tough going. But before long, especially with the help of some carefully targeted google searches, the story and characters make sense. Stendhal's narrative voice is at once strong and subtle. Amazingly, the stories of court intrigues, with fawning courtiers and venal wannabes, resonate today.
