Abraham Dee Bartlett and the Invention of the Modern Zoo
Aug 14, 2015mmcbeth29 rated this title 5 out of 5 stars
SUMMARY: This is the story of Abraham Dee Bartlettt who became the superintendent of the London Zoo in the late 1800s and worked ceaselessly to better the lives of the animals. Growing up, he learned everything he could about animals and their needs. Once he was in charge of the zoo, he worked with the animals in a gentle manner and found ways to make them healthier as well as to live in better comfort, including bringing them out of cages into natural habitats. ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created in paper collage and mixed media. They are unbelievably detailed and intricate. I could look at them over and over again for pure enjoyment. REVIEW: This was a wonderful biography/history story. The paragraphs were kept short and simple, but still rich with information. There were plenty of informative illustrations to keep all ages interested. This book would be a lovely springboard book for teachers to use in the classroom when studying animals or this time in history (late 1870s). AGE RECOMMENDATION: Grades 1-5. There is something for each age group in this book NOTE: I received an ARC copy of this book from LibraryThing and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. My reviews are always 100% honest based on preset criteria.
