In college, I took a class on the history of Ireland. For our final paper we had a choice of movie to watch that focused on a specific historical event we had talked about in class. Philomena was the movie I chose. I thought this movie was beautiful. It was heartbreaking to realize the actuality of the events - nuns taking in young, pregnant, unwed women, putting them to work, and adopting their children out to American families without the consent of the mothers or even telling them what happened to their children. The women were forced to work for "selfless" service of the nuns in helping them during a difficult situation - they were kept prisoner and forced to complete awful work for years, while they also lost their children.
