Just in time for Halloween I was fortunate enough to read Yrsa Sigurdardottir’s genuinely chilling “I Remember You: A Ghost Story.” Sigurdardottir is a pitiless writer, unwilling to spare either her characters or her readers. In this book we follow two plots, seemingly unrelated, which unfold in alternate chapters. In the first, three woefully unprepared Icelandic yuppies find themselves stranded in a deserted rural vacation community with a malevolent spirit. In the second, a psychologist helps the police investigate an act of vandalism and a suicide while also confronting the unsolved disappearance of his son. Sigurdardottir ratchets up the tension so high with her plot about the haunted yuppies that her second plot comes as a welcome relief. Eventually the two plots converge as they must, and there’s no escaping the horror.
