It is the late 90s, and free-spirited Afghan journalist Rukhsana chafes under the Taliban's dehumanizing rule. Terrified that her illicit reporting of the regime's atrocities have been noticed by the religious police, she longs to flee to her fiance in America, but refuses to abandon her teenage brother Jahan and their dying mother. An unexpected escape plan presents itself: a national cricket tournament in which the winning team will be sent to Pakistan. Rukhsana and Jahan form a team with their equally disaffected cousins, determined to win the tournament and their freedom. But...can they trust each other when discovery means death? And if Rukhsana alone escapes, can she bear to leave Jahan behind? An emotionally gripping story of family loyalty and love in the face of tyranny.
