Heart-breaking, beautiful, and poignant, War Horse manages to convey suffering, sadness, heroism, courage, and innocence in one wonderful experience. Told through the eyes of a horse, characters are judged throughout by their actions rather than by whether they wear a uniform or what color it is. The movie avoids being political or explicitly anti-war, instead depicting candidly but with restraint the human dramas of WWI. It is certainly an emotional ride, but not fluffy or lightweight. Overall, it is bitter-sweet, and I definitely recommend it for anyone over the age of 10 or so (there are scenes of non-graphic but intense war violence, peril, and harrowing suffering of animals). And there's Tom Hiddleston. And Benedict Cumberbatch. And a beautiful horse. Check, check, check. All bases covered.
