Mandolin and fiddle were popular instruments in early American string bands playing blues, jazz, old time, pop and whatever their audiences demanded. Howard Armstrong or "Louie Bluie" (1909 - 2003), whose musical career began in 1920's, was a master of both instruments. In this movie, he showed his skills in playing everything from old-time fiddle tunes through "Tin Pan Alley" to raunchy blues. Terry Zwigoff, in this excellent documentary, united Armstrong with the guitarist Ted Bogan, Armstrong's musical partner of many years, and others including the blues mandolinist Yank Rachel and Ikey "Banjo" Robinson. Besides being an excellent musician, Armstrong was a fine artist, excellent raconteur (informal storyteller) and all-round character. Any lover of old music or storytelling (often off-colour) will enjoy this DVD. Extra features include more storytelling and musical performances, as well as a commentary by director Terry Zwigoff putting the film into social and historical perspective. For the naive among us, be warned: don't believe everything the old guys tell you.
