You have to have a certain patience to read a Turtledove book anymore. The key is to know which characters are worth reading and which are only good for skimming. He also uses a lot of the same turns of phrase and jargon amongst characters. Each time you return to a character during the story you have to slog through some re-hashing of what he or she just did. If a particular soldier dislikes another you will be reminded of this constantly, and usually with the same descriptive language. All that being said the overarching, strategic story is usually enjoyable. He's willing to look for plausible alternate histories to write about. This is what I read for. If you love history and what if stories, and you can learn the proper skimming and skipping techniques, this book is worth spending some time in.
