My fourth Jane Eyre adaptation. I thought this one was really quite good, but not perfect. Jane (Ruth Wilson) was one of the best Janes, in my opinion, matched perhaps only by Mia Wasikowska (2011). Rochester (Toby Stephens) was the second best, topped only by Timothy Dalton (1983). The language of this one was modernized, and I didn't care for that; otherwise, the story was a pretty close rendering of the book. Some of the visuals didn't work for me. Why, at that crucial scene when Jane hears Rochester's voice, does the screen flash back and forth to a waterfall, for instance? And the music didn't work either. It was distracting, even jarring, at times. When Jane arrives at St. John's, for instance, it sounds like a hospital monitor in the background. Jarring to say the least. Nevertheless, this adaptation was good. It was quite accurate and nearly matched the mood of the novel. Ranking the Jane Eyre's I've seen, I put them as follows, 2011, 2006, 1983, 1996. As for the other adaptations, time will tell if I ever watch them. I'm kind of Eyred out.
