The story of a young Irish family moving to early 1980's NYC to allow the father (Paddy Considine) to pursue dreams of acting. Their free spirited mother (a fine Samantha Morton) and his feisty daughers (Kirsten & Naomi Sheridan, Director Jim Sheridan's daughters who also co-wrote the screenplay) bond with the eccentric characters in their tenement apartment, including their troubled landlord (Djimon Hounsou). As the story unfolds through the eyes (and video camera) of their oldest daughter Kristy, one finds the family has come to America to pursue not in pursuit of the fabled American dream, but to escape a recent family tragedy. Well acted, well written and perfectly cast, I'd recommend this film to anyone looking for a touching, emotionally wide-ranging film.
