Awesome movie about East/West cultures and family. Awkwafina does a really nice job as the main character. Must see, but bring some tissues too.

Available to stream on Kanopy! The Farewell is one of those movie that makes you laugh and tears your heart out. The movie's tagline is "Based on an actual lie" Director and writer, Lulu Wang , made this movie based on her own experience of coming home to China for a sham wedding and to say goodbye to her terminally grandmother, who has been kept in the dark about her prognosis. "A good lie," one of her doctors explains. As a Westerner, this concept goes against our whole philosophy of medical transparency and individualism, but the characters turned me to their way of thinking. One character explains that in Chinese culture, "A person's life is part of a whole. Family. Society." It's our duty to carry the emotional burden for our loved ones. Awkwafina shines in understated elegance as Billi, the film's Chinese-born, U.S. raised protagonist who struggles to reconcile her Western mentality with what her Eastern and collective-minded family feels is best. Zhao Shuzhen's performance as Nai Nai (grandmother) is so lovely and dignified. The best part of the movie is her scenes with Awkwafina. The teasing and close bond between them made miss my own grandma. The music is haunting and I loved getting a glimpse of another culture. Lulu Wang was seriously robbed when she didn't get an Academy Award nomination. Badly done, Oscars!

A wonderfully well done movie that follows a family gathering around the matriarch of the family after a deadly diagnosis.

Marvelous film!! The ongoing issue is one faced by many families regardless of ethnic background. An elderly relative does not have long to live. Is she told or lied to about her prognosis. It is a Chinese tradition to " carry the sorrow and fear " for the loved one. This issue is very difficult for American raised Billi played by Awkwafina. At 71 I frequently feel
" old fashioned and behind the times". I had heard the name, but did not connect it to this film. I believe she did a lovely performance. Despite the overall sadness of the film, I was delighted to have it begin with one of my all time favorite jokes - the cat is on the roof!!! I have loved Chinese films for many years and enjoyed this one very much. Recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby

Sweet and heartfelt, without being overly sappy, a family comes together to support an ailing matriarch with a seemingly terminal diagnosis. There's genuine affection and love between the family members as they discuss many of the differences between the Western and Eastern cultures. The end credits (at least for me) put a pleasant button on the end of a thought-provoking film about life and family.

This was such a wonderful film, both heart breaking and heart warming, based on a true event in the director's family. *** Please be sure to keep watching after the credits begin rolling, as it is only then when you'll see the true ending of the film. ***

Interesting and different and suitable for all ages.
However, there are some issues with the plot that really bothered me ("plot holes", logic, and other inconsistencies).
The acting is good, the characters are lovable, etc.
At moments, the movie really connected emotionally with the audience.
Still, there are issues with the plot, the treatment, and the ending, etc. that I would like to see fixed.
3 solid stars.

What was the hype about? Acting was fine but honestly the movie was nothing special.

Nai Nai: I walked the path of life and I have to say, you will face with difficulties. But you have to have an open mind. Don't be like a bull hitting his horns all over the walls of the room. Life isn't just about what you do, it's more about how you do it.

Only three quotes in IMDb this morning. Expect many more in the near future. Here is the "On the roof" joke:

So one day the wife goes out of town. And when she returns, the husband says... honey, the cat is dead. And she says "How can you tell me so abruptly like this?" You have to ease me into bad news." Like honey... the cat, he got on the roof.

So... now... a few months later the wife goes out of town again. And she returns, and the husband greets her again. But this time he learned his lesson. And as the wife comes through the door he says, "Honey, your mom, she got on the roof."
