During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they've chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands, the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year's Day, one of them is dead. The trip began innocently enough: admiration of the stunning, if foreboding, scenery; champagne in front of a crackling fire; and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group's tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year's Eve, the cord holding them together snaps. Now one of them is dead, and another one of them did it. The old adage says to keep one's friends close-but just how close is too close?

There are worse reads, but this isn't what I'd call "good." None of the characters are remotely likable. The plot tries so hard to be gripping, but it's really just kind of meh. And it's too bad about the copyediting... is it really that hard to learn how to use a comma?

Clever, creepy, and compelling! I would love to see this made into a movie.

An enjoyable, creepy whodunnit murder mystery. The tension among these frienemies is palpable, and the twists will keep you guessing.

The mystery element (what little of it) was there and it came and went throughout the chapters. When all is final and revealed well, it’s all right but it’s not the best either. There’s not much in the way of background information and if there was, not much is given and the characters have no substance at all. The plot comes up empty and the whole thing with Iain, was that meant to be a red herring? This entire story just didn’t amount to what I thought it would. It’s disappointing as I wanted to like the book and was hyped for it.

The story kept me reading, or rather listening, even when the characters were screaming at me to go away. Even when I realized it was predictable I was still listening. This one was a hard one to rate. I didn't like the story or the characters, but felt invested for some reason. I would not recommend it or not recommend it. Lol, I am just confused on if I liked it.

Hard to put down... plot moves quickly with interesting characters.
Better than most for this kind of book....
