Thoroughly depressing. Like the other comment here that they wanted to like it...... the same goes for me. I fast forwarded through some of it.

Lovely film, excellent acting, sad story.

I wanted to like this, I really did, but it was so boring!

So much whispered talking that not much could be understood. It also was disconnected and had no character buildup. The landscape was pleasant showing how nice life would be living there - without the people in this movie. It was boring with no expectations fulfilled.

The premise was lovely, but this ended up being a too-quiet British drama with very few likable characters and quite a few uninteresting nasty ones.

I liked Emily Mortimer a lot in Disney's 'The Kid'. Haven't seen her in much since, though. This movie seemed ok, but nothing special, up until the end when the plot just seemed to veer left suddenly in a way that made little sense and just left you confused. Really bad story writing at the end. This woman was of such weak character it turned out. Disappointing. I would have expected something better.

A good British film. Quiet.

It’s a people movie. If you think the last Avengers movie was “good”, this is not for you. If you like BBC programs, this is a good one for your movie list.

Slow movie with mediocre dialog. It’s probably not really a “bad” movie but it is sooo so ordinary. And everything is sooo predictable and overly foreshadowed. I almost quit 15 minutes into the movie but forced myself to watch the entire thing because I generally like the main actors. Bill Nighy was pretty good, Emily Mortimer was ok, but Patricia Clarkson had nothing to work with; her character was basically a one note caricature.

My wife and I enjoyed this movie. It's a good storyline and well-cast. Bill Nighy in particular does a good job as a foil to the evil matron who "knows what's right for the village and everyone in it". That reminds me, I have a serious problem with the review of this movie by cbx4evr where that individual kept the movie longer than needed as a "favor" to those who were waiting for it. That kind of attitude is consummately arrogant and reeks of "I know what's good for you, and you do not." Please let me remind that reviewer that a significant number of people rated this movie highly.

The best quotes are in IMDb already:

My favorite, not that I concur totally:
Edmund Brundish: Old age is not the same thing as historical interest. Otherwise you and I would be far more interesting than we are.
