Just how much can one human endure? A true story. Charlie looked a lot like Steve McQueen in the original Papillon. Way too long.

A good remake but the original version was better. Emotional story about friendship, loyalty and human survival.

I have to watch the original version again. This remake was good. Well acted. I didn't like the sexual content. I am not sure that was in the original movie.

Entertaining remake of the 1973 original, which is a better film. The major problem I have with it is I've actually set foot on Devil's Island and it looks nothing like this. You would think someone would actually take the time to scout the place and try to recreate it more accurately. At least at the end of the 1973 version, you'll catch a glimpse of the actual prison.

Choppy storytelling that just jumped from scene to scene. Minimal character development. Lots of brutal violence. Not very well done and not worth the 2 hrs 12 minutes running length.

Wow. A very well made movie. Very heavy. Excellent movie making and performance. Everything felt so real in this movie. Based on a memoir.

Directed by Michael Noer in 2017 based on Charrière's autobiographies "Papillon" and "Banco", this docudrama depicts the life of French convict Henri Charrière, who spent his days in the notorious Devil's Island penal colony and escaped in 1941 with the help of another convict, counterfeiter Louis Dega.
Although both adaptations seem great, I like the 1973 version better becasue I love the performances of Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.

A fascinating story about a man who is framed for a crime he didn't commit in 1931. This movie is based on true events, and stars award-winning actor Rami Malek.

Never saw the original but the remake had some good qualities. The acting was great and the story was interesting. It was nothing extraordinary but was a decent film.

I thought this was a decent re-make of the 1973 classic. This movie is based upon the two books by Henri Charriere, Papillon (1969) and the sequel, Banco (1972).
It is not that much different, from the 1973 film, with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, but is a good film on it's own. Well written, well acted and directed.
Good performances by Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim: 2013; The Lost City of Z: 2016), and Rami Malek (Mr. Robot: tv: 2015 - 2019; Bohemian Rhapsody: 2018).
Ends with a follow through update text and a picture of the real Henri Charriere.
Deleted Scenes on this DVD as extras.
