This was my first Officer Salt book, and I am truly happy to have found this stand-alone prequel.

Trudy Nan Boyce has street cred galore and it shows in everything she writes about the Atlanta projects, Salt’s beat. The details in Boyd’s narrative, from weather tor weaponry, are both educational and atmospheric. Her dialog is true, and runs from poignant to laugh-aloud funny.

The plot in The Policeman’s Daughter--linking Salt's personal demons to several police investigations-- is straightforward, but that does not keep this book from being a page-turner. The “bad” guys she polices are complex human beings, and Salt is a sucker for redemption. Salt's empathy for the people in The Homes shines through.

Other totally endearing aspects of this book are Salt’s watchful dog and his (her) sheep.
