A lecker treat, Mephisto Waltz is set in Vienna at the turn of the (19th --> 20th) century. The author is a clinical psychologist and a nerd in the best sense: he plays on concepts (Freud appears, as do theories about "group psychology" and mobs) during the early days of psychology in Vienna, reflecting the sociohistorical trends of that time-- anarchists trying to undo royal authority, experimentation with crazy communes and gender concepts. He has an uncanny knowledge of music, especially Schubert’s lieder: Max plays the piano, and Inspector Rheinhardt sings. Last but not least, the book is sprinkled with references to Viennese food, especially the coffee shops, which is also fun but torture… This book makes me want to visit die Neue Gallerie in the Upper East Side, and sample both art and pastries.
