I am, perhaps, the only person on the planet not to be wowed by this book.

The wife-double plot concept has potential and does suck one in intially, but the nuts and bolts execution is ham-handed and, ok I'll say it, gimmicky, relying on designer labels and Upper East Side cliches.

The characterization is spotty-- erratic, thin in so many places (the "wives"), wooden (Aunt Charlotte) or stereotypes (the Gothic sister)-- so that the psycho-surprises are underwhelming.

I kept reading, dutifully, to the very end, assuming that the climactic revelations and all the hype would be warranted. Sigh. Not to be.

Tana French, who probes scary psychological depths , creates scary, unpredictable plots AND has writerly chops, is so much more worth the time. Like Ruth Rendell, she is a Writer with a capital W.
