4 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy historical romance.

When Devon Ravenel's cousin dies, he is the last male heir to the family name. He has no desire to be an Earl and plans on selling the crumbling estate and it's poorly kept lands and not worrying about the women currently living there. However, when he meets his cousin's widow, Kathleen challenges his responsibilities, he begins to question his desires for his life and his role within the Ravenel family.

I enjoyed the immediate chemistry between Devon and Kathleen and the story of a reluctant Earl taking over a crumbling estate and family. I love how this story set up the whole family and their roles in the rest of the series. I enjoyed all of the side characters a lot, and appreciated that there was time to get to know them as a group before the series continued. I also appreciated that there was a bit of a start on the romance for the next book in this one. I wasn't expecting the action element of this story, but really enjoyed that part and thought it added to the depth and intensity of the story. I thought that Devon's transformation was rather devastating and emotional. I'm excited to continue on with the series. There was one love scene that didn't seem very consensual... which is very surprising to me.. but was disappointing.

Even for the genre, this book is heavy on non consensual and at best dubious consent. Constantly glorifies and romanticizes emotionally and physically abusive behavior. Too uncomfortable/disturbing to be sexy or enjoyable.

Sent back unread as it is a series - would be a good book to read but later.

Best story I've read in this library by far. It captured my attention right from the very first sentence. Just loved this story, characters and can't wait to read the other 2 books about Helene and Mr. Winterborne, and Pandora. I love this author!!!

This was my first Lisa Kleypas book and I couldn't be happier. I enjoyed this story so much and will be moving on to Marrying Winterborne as soon as I can. This is a typical first book in a series, setting up the intersecting story lines that will be focused on in future books. I don't think there was one character in this story that I didn't enjoy. I especially loved West, Pandora and Cassandra. They had some of the best and most humorous lines. I'm especially looking forward to their love stories. I've read where some reviewers state this isn't her best work. Well, since this is my first Kleypas book, I sense that I will be blown-away by some of her previous work. Bring it on!

I would also like to mention that I listened to the audiobook when I couldn't be reading the paperback and the narration was excellent. I'm a very picky audiobook listener and prefer to read rather than listen, but this book was a joy to listen to.

I actually enjoyed this one. I think she played it smart with having Devon leave to go back to London and recognize a stubborn woman who needs to have her wishes with respects to her idea of the mourning period accepted. A nice light read.

Usually look for her books, not sure what happened with this one. Could have choked the main female character in this one. She makes all the rules but doesn't have to follow them.
Should have been titled "Cold Hearted Shrew and the Rake"
