A gripping thriller of what actually occurred in and after an assassination attempt on Hitler in 1939. As told by Germans. English subtitles. An EXCELLENT movie well acted and graphic in the Gestapo's interrogation techniques. Anyone who is a student of history, WW 2 and the evils of Nazis and of oppressive regimes MUST see this movie. Rated R for horrible torture and bloodlust.

We're fortunate that the Germans did this before Spielberg could do another puerile hollywoodization of an important piece of history. It took a generation or two for the Germans to finally face their history squarely and honestly, though even now many there don't want to hear or think about it. The movie is undoubtedly the best dramatic film treatment of that history. The success is due in large part to its contrasting scenes of brutality, compassion, fear, banality, despair and criminal bureaucratic exactitude, bringing out the human complexities of existing in a social madhouse. Rather than bellowing "throw him outta here" and "smash him in the face," Hitler's voice in the background of the opening scenes is calm and reassuring. The consummate actor, once in power he wanted to appear the mature statesman instead of the rabble rouser. Not only did he fool the overwhelming majority of the people, who accepted his terrorizing of "racial inferiors" and "social misfits," he easily outmaneuvered and sidelined the conservative aristocrats and capitalists who handed him power in 1933. Though the traditional ruling class was politically emasculated, they did get what they wanted in Hitler: the destruction of the labor movement - the unions, Social Democrats and Communists - and the restoration of a militarized, imperialist Reich. To be able to infer these subtleties in a movie is a true artistic achievement.

Very slow going. I couldn't watch more than half of an hour of it. I was sooo bored.

Given the fact that we know the assassination attempt upon the life of Adolph Hitler failed, I was not certain how the film would build suspense. The director and writers did excellent work in portraying the history of Georg Elser and engaging the viewer in his fate. Highly recommend!! Kristi & Abby Tabby

Very unfortunate that his assassination of Hitler did not succeed. It would have most likely prevented 50 million deaths.
