My very favorite book.

Like Fredrik Backman's other novels, this book is filled with quirky but lovable characters. At times hilarious, and at other times heartbreaking, it takes the reader on a journey of discovery through the eyes of its 7 year old protagonist, Elsa.

It's stories like this that remind us of humanity. Told from the perspective of the almost-eight-year-old girl, the journey Elsa embarks upon will have you laughing out loud, thinking, smiling and engage at a deep emotional level. Use of fairy tale metaphors such as the Land of the Almost awake, along with funny yet appropriate nicknames for the characters, Backman has written a masterpiece, which in my opinion is FAR better than "A Man Called Ove". The author keeps the reader engaged throughout Elsa's journey shedding light not only on her Mother's past, but more importantly Granny who she comes to know far better in spite of her being no longer around. This is a must read for anyone that loves great storytelling. Characters are well developed, pace is perfect while the heart warming humor will bring belly laughs and feelings of Joy!

This was an enjoyable read.
I enjoyed the creative story of the grand mothers life in a fairytale the child would enjoy
The relationship between the two is timeless.
The great adventure was a good idea, to see more of the grandmother than known.
I would like to read more book by the author

I stopped reading this book after chapter 23. I didn't like the fantasy. The story was too quirky.

Thank you, insjavert , for such a thoughtful and understanding review of a delightful story. It is so sad that we can't all appreciate some "fantasy in our reality", not just in our private thoughts.

This book is fantastical and unbelievable, but it's so sweet and interesting that I loved it. The characters are varied and interesting. Enjoyable read. Not for children.
