Depressing and unappealing. Maybe that was the point given the source material? But I don't remember the book being so dour even given its content. True, the story doesn't end brightly and happily ever after, but at least in the book getting to the conclusion was more interesting. This movie visually, for several reasons, turned me off and I almost ended up turning it off.

what a downer the previous comment is. how does she look to herself in the mirror, with a candle glowing, rosacrucian style? this isn't the age of Victoria, any longer. no turning back, either. as to the movie, the actress looks exactly as I mind-pictured Julia, whilst reading the book. and John Hurt is one of the most highly regarded of actors.

It takes place in the future--not 1984. It is nothing like 1984, the book. Lots of full-frontal nudity, which as usual is used mostly to get some audience--any audience is better than none. It is dark, without being moody; depressing, with no glimmer of joy; and bleak without offering hope. The acting wasn't very good because the director wanted them to either be wooden or manically erotic. It certainly speaks to the US government's war machine: let children go without education and food because we must defend ourselves--even if it is by inventing enemies that don't exist. Unless you are really bored, skip this one.
