"Trevor Noah's unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents' indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa's tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle. Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man's relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother—his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life. The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother's unconventional, unconditional love" --

Trevor Noah is a very funny storyteller ... of his own story and what shaped him. Hearing it in his voice and accent really made it. Funny & REAL.

Trevor Noah's recollections of his South African childhood and early manhood tell us a lot about the nature of apartheid. It is worth noting that Trevor, like his mom, though recognizing injustice and the silly inconsistencies of the system of apartheid, does not allow it to keep him down. Mr. Noah, current host of "The Daily Show" and a stand-up comic, tells his stories with a great deal of humor. This is one book, I would argue, best encountered in audio form. Mr. Noah does his own narration, and he brings his sense of timing and of speaking as different characters to the task with great effect.

This book was a bit slow going to me, but I skipped ahead a bit and then really got engrossed. I don't watch The Daily Show but Trevor Noah has enough stories (and a description of how he started doing comedy and/or moved to the US isn't even included) to fill a few books.

I had thought that Born a Crime would be more about his childhood as a person who wasn't allowed to be with his mother in public or his father in public, but it ended up being so much more.

I highly recommend this book if you are interested in biographies, South Africa, racism, or simply Trevor Noah as a person.

Trust me, you do not have to know who Trevor Noah is to love this book. This is a must listen! Having Noah narrate his own story was spectacular. You get to hear his timing, his accent, even his use of other languages, all of which help draw you into the atmosphere of his autobiography. The story itself is solid, and will appeal to anyone who loves a good story, fiction or nonfiction. You will laugh, be shocked, laugh, be horrified, cry, and laugh some more. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic!!!

This has become one of my favorite books of all time. I loved listening to his beautiful South African accent. I laughed, I cried, I was gutted in the best way. Trevor Noah has a gift for story telling and the way he layers in different details adds so much richness. Amazing.

Since I would be driving solo to and from San Francisco for the San Francisco Marathon, I figured I would pick up a couple audio books to keep me entertained for the trip. This was my choice for the drive north on Saturday morning. I had heard great things about this book so went in with high expectations. I'm stoked to report that it met (and possibly exceeded) my expectations. I didn't know anything about the author prior to listening to his book (which he read), but after listening to this book I now have a better understanding of his story. It is pretty crazy everything that he went through. I don't want to spoil the book, but just know there are shocking parts, loving parts, parts that will enrage you and parts that will make you tear up. Trevor is an awesome storyteller and I can see why he has become a well-known comedian, political commentator, actor and television host. His story is one of racism in South Africa, but also an extremely unique experience due to being born of a black mother and white father (which was a crime at the time - hence the name of the book). PS His mom rocks my socks! I would give it a 9 out of 10.

What a fascinating life Trevor Noah has already lived! I loved listening to his voice. I highly recommend this book in audio. I was captivated by his stories and his close and endearing bond with his mother. He presents an informative narrative about life in South Africa and his personal experience of the effects of Apartheid.

Amazing story.

Highly engaging and entertaining, which is unsurprising given the author is a professional comedian and entertainer. Less expected is the insightfulness, breadth, and quality of the writing. Noah had an extraordinary childhood and he draws upon it for a wide range of personal stories, all united by his deep love and respect for his mother, who has clearly been the largest influence on his life. Highly recommended.

This audiobook is... a must. It is read by the author/entertainer, Trevor Noah, himself and it is brilliantly executed. You laugh because his delivery of events is so amusing, but cry because the reality of the content is overwhelmingly brutal. There's no question... a must.
