Josie and her husband have split up, she's been sued by a former patient and lost her dental practice, and she's grieving the death of a young man senselessly killed. When her ex asks to take the children to meet his new fiancée's family, Josie makes a run for it, figuring Alaska is about as far as she can get without a passport. Josie and her kids, Paul and Ana, rent a rattling old RV named the Chateau, and at first their trip feels like a vacation: They see bears and bison, they eat hot dogs cooked on a bonfire, and they spend nights parked along icy cold rivers in dark forests. But as they drive, pushed north by the ubiquitous wildfires, Josie is chased by enemies both real and imagined, past mistakes pursuing her tiny family, even to the very edge of civilization.

I really hated this main character. She is selfish, puts her children in harm's way, doesn't really care much for them until she's had two glasses of wine and then they are the most magical creatures she has ever seen. I thought for sure the main character had mental health issues but that never seemed to be addressed. I was hoping for more of a concrete resolution, more for the children's sakes than Josie's.

I had high hopes for this book, it had gotten good reviews. I was quite disappointed, the
story dragged, the characters never went anywhere and I had a hard time finishing it. I
kept hoping it would get better or that something interesting would develop, but the
wandering, hopeless mother kept being hopeless and boring. A good book should stir
the emotions, this one just stayed in neutral.

Preposterous setup. Gave it ten minutes and quit.

A well written page-turner full of thrills and laughs..... too soon ended.

What do you do when your life falls apart? Jump in an ancient RV and drag your two kids around Alaska. Frightening, funny and thrilling.

One of those books where you are on the edge most of the time, waiting for something bad (or smelly) to happen. I mean that in a good way. It's a modern day type of Goldilocks - very readable and full of quirks.

I expected more from this story. The ending was disappointing. The author makes quite a few scatological references. I suppose this was intended to be funny?

Really annoying. Lucky her children didn't die with her irresponsible search for peace.

It's a suspenseful thrill ride except there's no scary villains, just 2 super cute kids.
