This was an easy, well-written, and engrossing read, although it was also frustrating at times. I'm a sucker for stories about family dysfunction, especially when the family in question is super wealthy. It's wonderful escapism to read about the problems of the privileged, since their struggles f... Read More »

A fun, enjoyable read that kept me engaged throughout. I highly recommend if you enjoy books about upper class families and how they can be dysfunctional in a variety of ways. Take to the beach. It was well written.

A total waste of time. Garbled and poorly written. I skipped along and could
only think of throwing it in the garbage. "Heather's Pick".... do you think Heather actually
read it? lol. lol This author does not have the writing skill.

With so much hoopla, I guess I expected more from this book. It could be a good HBO movie though.

I kept waiting for a climax, but there wasn't one. It was just a slice out of a family's life, and not a very compelling story. I found it hard to like any of the characters. I found similarities between this book and J.K. Rowling's "Casual Vacancy" (which I also thought was disappointing).

Not profound, but entertaining.

Beautiful "poetic" writing - even though not a particularly compelling plot. (The synopsis makes it sound more compelling than it actually was.) Good first attempt by a new author. Hopefully she will continue to hone her craft - not end up like her character with 20 years between her first and second novel - and give us more sooner rather than later.

Really surprised how popular this book about a family of "me firsts" was. I wasn't interested in them and I'm sure if they were real and we met in person they wouldn't be interested in me.
I may have rated it higher if I listened to the talking book. Sometimes the performance by narrators adds depth and clarity to characters.

After seeing this book on multiple "must-read" lists and witnessing several people reading it on my morning commute, I thought I'd give this book a go. I just don't see what the hubbub is all about.

The premise sounded interesting and had so much potential, but the writing is simply awful. The main Plumb family characters are vapid and shallow clichés; I couldn't connect with any of them, and I simply did not care what happened to them and their inheritance. There's also the numerous unnecessary characters whose storylines dragged the flow of this book to a screeching halt. I didn't find it funny or witty by any means. A real let down.

I'm not entirely sure why this book took off like it did, but it's entertaining enough. The audiobook is really well-read by Mia Barron. She handled the range of characters so well in terms of gender, age, and ethnicity. The four main siblings are all "types" and not especially appealing, but I think their dilemmas are understandable. Probably a good book club book.

This book was decent. Especially if you like books about dysfunctional families. It was hard to relate to most of the characters and I was pretty disappointed in the ending. It just seemed like there were too many loose ends.
