"M. C. Beaton's New York Times bestselling Hamish Macbeth series continues with a new mystery featuring Scotland's most quick-witted but unambitious policeman. James Harrison has recently moved to a restored hunting lodge in Sutherland with his gorgeous private nurse Gloria Dainty. When Hamish visits Mr. Harrison to welcome him to the neighborhood, the old man treats him very rudely. Gloria apologizes for her employer's behavior, and Hamish takes the plunge and invites her out for dinner. On the appointed evening, Hamish waits for Gloria at the restaurant. And waits. Gloria never shows up. Four days later, Gloria's body washes up on the beach near Braikie. Now without a date and without his former policeman Dick Fraser (who left the force to buy a bakery), Hamish must find out who killed the beautiful new resident of Sutherland, and why, before the murderer strikes again..."--

Another perfect gem of a book. Impossible to put down, and leaves one craving the next book minutes after finishing. Although it still has the cozy feel, in this one Hamish actually seems to solve these murders without one of his girlfriends pointing the way. Most of the action takes place away from Lochdubh, so we only get glimpses of my favorite villagers. READ THESE IN ORDER and you'll find this a lovely five-hour escape into the Highlands.

Hamish has a cantankerous old man and his household to contend with as he investigates the death of the old man's nurse. As in most of Beaton's novels, the bad folk get their comeuppance whether they are actually guilty or not.

the latest in a long running series. you only get long running as a series if the public loves the main character, as well as the setting. in other words, the formula fits the readers. they may be nostalgic for olde Scotland, or longing to experience a decent character of the male gender, or miss the village setting for their fictional lives: at any rate, it is hard to argue with such success. the author also wrote the Agatha Raisin series, so if you'd rather live in the psyche of a female-gendered lead character, there's a tip for you. " A faint sound of Asian music tinkled through the frosty air." " ' I should ha' reported in earlier, said Charlie, ' but I overslept.' There was a miserable hangdog air about him." " ' Many a woman has a past , but I am told she has at least a dozen, and that they all fit.' " " Hamish set out for the hunting lodge. He could feel his fury against Helen mounting.

One of the newest books with Hamish Macbeth. Felt like I had read the story before. I had to go back to my book list to check if I had read this book before or not. Same storyline. Same basic characters. There is comfort in familiar characters but the storyline is a bit worn out. I would recommend this book if you had not read many books from this series.

I found this book slow and boring at times. It was no surprise to me who the murderer was.
Dont think I will try anymore Hamish McBeth stories.

Love the author! Hamish never changes, and neither does Priscilla!

The Death of a Nurse --- by --- M.C. Beaton
In this installment of the adventures of Constable MacBeth, our copper is faced with the puzzling demise of Gloria Dainty, nurse. As always he works against the best efforts of Blair and Deviot, his police superiors, to solve this case. Very readable.
