Reading Johwor Ile's 'And After Many Days', one is forced to vacillate between the past and the present as well as a loss that is both deeply personal and deeply national. The Utu's are the fictional family of choice, who live in Port Harcourt and whose ethnicity is one of the plenteous southern minorities in Nigeria. The plot of the story kicks off somewhere in the chronological middle after the eldest Utu child, Paul has disappeared. We are then dragged through a review of the family's past against a backdrop of the political struggle within their village to secure the rights of its inhabitants. The looming antagonist is the corrupt government through its use of its extremely violent police and armed forces who act to protect the interests of an oil corporation, simply named, 'The Company'. The stage is thus set and the struggles that follow echo both the political climate of the setting and the more private nature of a home. A good read.
