Set in Algeria in 1954 at the beginning of the fight for independence. This film is true to the feeling of the place and time, and is gripping as the story unfolds of the 'teacher' played by Viggo Mortensen not being all he seems and the Algerian peasant, Reda Kateb, who killed his brother and needs to face the consequences of his actions. An intense film that will keep you glued to the screen.

Beautifully-done movie! While the desert can be stark and desolate, the Story takes you in and immerses you in the people's stories on both sides of the conflict, that you will soon forget how lonely the place is! Well-acted! Any shooting and violence are not gratuitous nor over- the- top! I highly recommend this historical, cultural movie!

A thoughtful and beautiful movie! It would never have been made in Hollywood, but for those that like the best in foreign film, this is the ticket!

Viggo Mortensen carefully chooses the films he takes a role in. This one fit well. The pace allows for the viewer to grasp the physical environment as well as what is taking place at the time in history.War pitting once friends into conflict on a larger scale to the smaller war of tradition between families when honor is challenged. This is not a sit down and be entertained movie. However, it stirs thought, beauty, and destruction of the peace that one seeks.

Viggo Mortensen stars in this French film based on the Albert Camus short story, The Guest. It takes place in Algeria in 1954, probably shortly before the war for independence from France would begin. Mortensen, having lived in Algeria his whole life, was soon to be considered just another hated Frenchman. Mortensen is given the task of taking an Arab to the next town to be tried and most likely to be executed. It is not a task he wants as he wants no part in the war that is about to begin. He is told that if he does not carry out this task he will be considered a traitor and be executed either by the French or the rebels against the French government.
