Compelling historical drama; the author draws you into her characters' lives easily, you can sense the filth and misery of these difficult times. Definitely NOT the light humor I was used to in her other novels, but still worth reading.

Moggach continues to find new worlds to explore in her unsentimental, realistic and enthralling novels. Here a young war widow runs a boarding house in WWI London with her son and a trusted servant. Although life is a struggle, that is just the way things are until a wealthy and strangely compelling butcher inveigles himself into their world. Everything changes, not all for the better.

Good light read (excuse the pun given the title). A few twists in the plot, captures the time period well and gives you the ending you have been waiting for throughout.
