From Library Staff

A teenage girl finds out she is intersex, and the whole school finds out soon after. A great balance of facts and emotional descriptions.

I learned a lot from this book. I knew what intersex was but not that there were different types. I learned about AIS and it was very informative about the topic over all. I liked Kristen for most of the book -- it was difficult when she was struggling with depression and "running away" from her diagnosis but it was understandable. I could have done without the romance. I think it would have been more powerful if she had found acceptance in herself without him, but it was still good. The representation of trans and homophobia was good. It was a little slow and dragged out in places -- I would have liked a better ending than just her redoing her facebook. I would have liked to see her go to school or college or just...something else than facebook. But that's just me. Still an overall good book and very informative.

I absolutely loved this book. It was so sweet, but still sad. This author did their research about intersex and it teaches you all about it but still in a real way. It also still addresses teenage bullying

An inspiring and well-researched coming of age story. Kristen is just coming into her own, she has a great boyfriend and has recently and surprisingly been made Homecoming Queen. She's ready to take things to the next level, but a routine visit to the doctor turns her world upside down. She has to rediscover what she believes, what she values and where she fits in the world. All while her entire school is watching and judging her.

This book was amazing. I've been looking for a YA book about an intersex character for a while, but they are really, really hard to find. And if you're someone who doesn't know much about being intersex, this is a perfect book from which you can learn. It perfectly packages facts and information about intersex people with a bit of history, with the emotional struggle that accompanies being out as intersex (especially when it wasn't her choice), and even the emotional struggle that accompanies not being out. We need more books like this.

Is this a "message book"? Yes, but an exceptionally well-written one. This is the first book I've read about an intersex main character where it's clear that the author has done her research, not just in terms of the medical aspects, but in listening to and seeking the opinions of intersex people. I was frustrated early on with the protagonist's strictly chromosomal understanding of gender, but it's not unrealistic for a high school student, and it gives her room to grow.

This is one of the very few books out there about teens who are intersex. not being Intersex myself. I cannot know if it is an accurate description. however it seems form the notes at the end that the author did her homework. some of the plot turns in the story I saw coming but overall it was a pretty good book.
