"[A] tale of two men whose accidental meeting one morning recalls their boyhood thirty-five years ago. Back then, Tommy was separated from his sisters after he stood up to their abusive father. Jim was by Tommy's side through it all. But one winter night, a chance event on a frozen lake forever changes the balance of their friendship. Now, Jim fishes alone on a bridge as Tommy drives by in a new Mercedes, and it's clear their fortunes have reversed. Over the course of the day, the lives of each man will be irrevocably altered" --

This book, which explores the themes of time and friendship, carries a big emotional punch.

Very bleak and spare. The story of two broken men, estranged childhood friends, and damaged families.

It took me a while to get into this novel and at one point almost gave up- but I am glad I didn't. I found it rather absorbing and was drawn into the lives of the two main characters who had been inseparable friends as kids but hadn't seen each other for 30 years. Slowly their lives and hidden fears and problems are revealed in a series of flashbacks. Being translated from Norwegian I was totally unfamiliar with place names, environment and the overall physicality of the novel- but was not put off. Well worth the time.
