It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned, the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers.

I was on pins and needles waiting to see if the girl gets the girl. I just wish more time was spent on their courtship instead of the court trials. Still it was a really good read.

Oh I love Sarah Waters so much.

The intimate detail written into to the characters, into the detail of the room, into the expertly created thrill/terror lurking in the background... I love it. Although all her books are different, I can’t seem to like one more than another. And while they all share so many characteristics, each one transports me into a unique (in time, place, scenario) world that I both love and cringe at. This one stands out, for me, for its ability to convince me that I could actually smell the dust in the house, hear the taps drip, the sounds of heals clicking down the hall…

After 5 discs nothing of any interest had happened so I gave up.

I was so sorry to finish this book. My car battery is now low because I couldn't turn the CD player off. Wonderful, gripping story, and incredible reading performance.

I agree with genepy- Juliet as reader is one of the best I've ever heard. It's a great story made even more enjoyable by Juliet's performance.

Juliet Stevenson, the reader of this audio book, is amazing ! it is hard to believe she is performing solo , changing her voice for each and every character. It heightens the intensity and suspense of this excellent novel . A delight!
