"You won't be able to put [it] down." -- Ladies Home Journal

Lori Roy follows her Edgar® Award-winning debut novel, Bent Road, with a spellbinding tale of suspense set against the crumbling façade of a once-respectable Detroit neighborhood in 1958.

The ladies of Alder Avenue--Grace, Julia, and Malina--struggle to care for one another amidst a city ripe with conflict, but life erupts when child-like Elizabeth disappears. A black woman was recently murdered at the factory where their husbands work, and the ladies fear that crime may foretell Elizabeth's fate. When an unmistakable sound rings out, will the vicious secrets that bind them all be revealed?

Well written fiction story. Lori Roy is a writer who sets a tone and skillfully builds it to a taut climax. This story is a nice exploration of the dramatic difference between community members public reputation and their complex private personas.

An entertaining mystery that leaves more than a little guesswork at times.

Lori Roy can really tell a story and this mystery ,while evocative of To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Help, is richly unique . The two different streets speak of more than failing real estate values. They represent the crumbling racial divide of once great American cities. A missing child, a sexual assault , a murdered woman..these bring neighbours together and break neighbourhoods apart.
