A preeminent scientist and atheist asserts the irrationality of belief in God and the harm religion has inflicted on society, from the Crusades to 9/11. Examines God from the Old Testament to the more benign, but illogical, Celestial Watchmaker favored by some Enlightenment thinkers, and argues for the improbablilty of a supreme being. Also argues that religion fuels war, foments bigotry, and abuses children.

Richard Dawkins’ unapologetic defence of his beliefs, often in the face of vicious attacks, is refreshing and inspirational (some thoughtless reader was even spurred to write rude (and ignorant) comments into the library book that I borrowed: so it must have touched a nerve). This is a courageous, bold, brilliant, witty and highly engaging book which does a great job of exposing truths in this very sensitive area. Sadly, questioning the truth of religious items of faith still seems to be taboo. These days the very concept of truth in general seems to be under attack from several quarters. Whether these trends are related or not, there is danger in both of them. If that concerns you then you should appreciate this book.
The future well-being of our planet depends on enough people accepting and acting on important scientific truths, which certain vested interests (often but not exclusively religious) are trying very hard to suppress. If you care about the future then you should care very much about the extent to which society, and by extension its leaders, are facing up to these truths.

atheism is the new fundamentalism. True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing. He who knows not and knows not he knows not, he is a fool—shun him.

it isn't God who says its ok for doctors and women to collude in birthing infants only to rip them from limb to limb and crush their skulls, so that those women can claim it was righteous to do so, for, ' it is (was) my body, and i get to decide what to do with it.' 'hands off my body!' 'hands off our bodies, don't take away our rights to self-determination!'--etc., nauseatingly etc. . . . . //Huxley wrote an excellent novel which illustrates what happens when people believe they are godless (except they secretly believe that Science is really God, and scientists are the priests of/for it): BRAVE NEW WORLD. and, if you have a prejudice against Fiction, or, specifically, Sci-Fi fiction, Huxley wrote many excellent essays on this subject, with which he was increasingly concerned as his life wore on.// John Lennon, PLASTIC ONO BAND, "GOD is a concept / by which we measure our Pain." George Harrison, LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD, "The Lord Loves Those Who Love The Lord, and The Lord says whatever you do is gonna come right back on you." Even earlier, during the film, HELP!, John is right in there swinging, mocking the scientists- tight- asses the fictional Beatles have to deal with in the farcical plot of HELP!, the movie. You don't have to be an intellectual to be righter than others. It's not as if intellectuals are the only ones granted the license to think in large terms, you know. I also recommend the Hungarian writer whose last name was Koestler, both for his nonfiction books, and for his fictional and timely, novels. What the heck, might as well throw Graham Greene in there. ( shout out to ramona). . . . THE BASEMENT ROOM. . . D. H. Lawrence, THE ROCKING HORSE WINNER. . . Maeterlinck. . .

Isn't is great to be smarter than all of those before us, knowing that life has no meaning, and that you will never see your loves ones ever again after you die. If you really want to witness Richard Dawkin's intelligence, you must watch the documentary, "Expelled. No intelligence Allowed." Dawkins tells us all his most insightful line in this documentary, "There could be a possibility that aliens from another galaxy came here and planted seeds on our planet for our existence to occur."
A man who doesn't believe in an intelligent design, yet suspects aliens seeded our planet for our existence. Dawkins you're intelligence makes me weak to my knees. Don't worry, folks who love Dawkin's are so open minded with other's opinions. There is probably not one Christian that has ever questioned the existence of intelligent design, but every single Athiest knows for a fact there is no such thing as intelligent design. Unless, of course, an alien from another planet created our existence. Wow!
Athiest's have to be some of the most narrow minded folks on the planet.

Time for Christianity (and religion as a whole) to go the way of Hercules and Zeus. We have 150 years of research from multiple branches of science that prove humans evolved from an ape ancestor. To deny evolution is to deny Biology, Anthropology, Paleontology and Genetics.
To deny evolution is to deny the encyclopedia definition of HUMAN BEING: "a culture-bearing primate classified in the genus Homo, especially the species H. sapiens."
To deny evolution is to deny every science organization and post-secondary school in the world, as well as all the science magazines, science journals, natural history museums...

Evolution is only still called a 'theory' because scientists use the word theory different from the regular use of the word. For example, the earth going around the sun is a theory (heliocentric theory); gravity is a theory; cells are a theory; germs are a theory. In science, things can be both fact and theory at the same time, as the National Academy of Sciences explains:

There are hundreds of reasons why the Bible fails as a moral compass, fails as a science textbook, and fails as a history book. Because every time Bible authors make a claim about the natural world, they get the wrong answer. The Bible author believed in killing witches, killing homosexuals, dashing baby's heads on rocks (Psalm 137:9), owning and beating your slaves (Exodus 21), and so on and so forth. Despite religion's best effort to keep us in the dark ages, Science has dragged religion kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

Richard Dawkins is an expert in evolutionary biology, but honestly he is not the best educator (in my opinion). If your goal is to learn to think logically and to believe true things, I'd recommend The Atheist Experience youtube channel (specifically the videos with Matt Dillahunty)

When the subject of the "anthropic principle" vs the "ontological principle" comes up, I just sigh and screen out the pro and con religious "philosophical" noise. I'm a physicist with a PhD from a top 5 physics school, and almost all of the highly intelligent physicists I have known are agnostics. Speaking of only the very best physicists I have known, none claimed to be atheists, and only a few Christians & Jews have expressed belief in the existence of "A Supreme God" --- if that is the correct expression for their beliefs, which vary from person to person. Most of us just sit back and say "There is no provable evidence that god exists, and there is no provable evidence that god does not exist." That's because science is based upon provable observations, and religion is based upon faith --- and the two are mutually exclusive, and we physicists are philosophically stuck in the middle in "I Don't Know Land'. I'm far more comfortable being a skeptic than a pro or con extremist.

1 Corinthians 15:33 “Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for "bad company corrupts good character."

Galatians 5:10 “This false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough!”
‭‭”I am trusting the Lord to keep you from believing false teachings. God will judge that person, whoever he is, who has been confusing you.”

Richard Dawkins is undoubtedly well read and knowledgeable that he turns an incredibly controversial and difficult topic into a relatively easily understood and balanced analysis. One can understand why many dislike his work and positions, but cannot deny he has some strong and supported claims. I highly recommend this book to everyone, including religious individuals who are hostile to his claims.

Like many, I attended Sunday School through my youth. I recall asking more questions during confirmation classes than most of my peers. When I was still in high school, roughly sixty years ago, I read Malinowski’s "Magic, Science, and Religion." This book caused me to ask myself questions about my beliefs.

My introduction to Dawkins was through the "Oxford Book of Modern Science Writing," which Dawkins edited. It is a wonderful collection of great writing in the sciences that was published in 2008. Unfortunately, TCCL does not have this book. I next read "The Selfish Gene," and will probably read more of Dawkins’ works at some point, although biology is not a particular interest of mine. Incidentally, many of Dawkins’ detractors do not seem to understand that he does not believe that genes have personalities. He clearly believes that a scientific approach to the question of God’s existence is a valid exercise. His often dismissive and acerbic tone could make this book unpleasant reading for religious readers.

The only realistic possibility for the existence of God is an old-fashioned idea that has more recently been labeled Intelligent Design. If you cannot imagine reading anything else in this book, at least take time to read the seven or eight pages Dawkins devotes to “irreducible complexity.” Although arguments based on this notion have been made since Darwin’s time, we now possess the knowledge to knock them down. Antony Flew is aware of this aspect of the ID argument, but appeals to a different aspect as the basis for his conversion. But that’s an issue for comment on his book…

"The God Delusion" is really an anti-religion screed, and seems to be an equal opportunity offender as far as I can tell from the comments. Religious folk who believe that morality can’t exist without God, but don’t want to read Dawkins’ arguments about proofs of God’s existence/nonexistence should be willing to read at least the 25-30 pages he uses to discuss “The Roots of Morality: Why Are We Good?”

"Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code, and the film made from it, are arousing huge controversy in church circles. Christians are encouraged to boycott the film and picket cinemas that show it. It is indeed fabricated from start to finish: invented, made-up fiction. In that respect, it is exactly like the gospels. The only difference between The Da Vinci Code and the gospels is that the gospels are ancient fiction while The Da Vinci Code is modern fiction."
