I had read the paper version when it first came out and enjoyed it then. Recently I listened to it again - in preparation for a trip to northern Italy - and was once again charmed by the story, it's humor, it's warmth. The reader does a fantastic job of matching his voice to that of the different characters.

The voice actor on this title is great - does a wonderful job with a variety of accents and male and female voices. This is a perfect type of book for an audio book. Complex enough to hold interest but not so complicated that you can't focus on another activity. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Funny, poignant tale filled with the kinds of characters you want to be friends with. I listened to the audiobook and honestly couldn't wait to get into my car so I could start reading it again... my commute has never been so wonderful! Also, special props to the reader of this story - Edoardo Ballerini. I've listened to many audiobooks and he is by far the best performer I've ever listened to. And he really is a performer, too. His accents and personas are incredible. I've just borrowed another audiobook based entirely on the fact that he is the reader, and that is something I've never done before.

I couldn't....just couldn't....finish this book. It started out just fine and went downhill from there. Once the storyline started to include Richard Burton & Elizabeth Taylor this book just spiralled downhill to where I couldn't go on.

No ruins here. Jess Walter has written a glorious book, full of characters who are gorgeous catastrophes seeking fame, or redemption, or both, in one way or another. Walter moves the reader fluidly between the Italian coast in 1962, 1980s Seattle and early 2000s London and Hollywood, skillfully unfolding the story of these flawed people and their intertwined lives.

I've been a 'reader' almost all of my life...lately it's audio novels as my eye's tire too easily. As a result I've listened too hundreds of novels....and know almost within half way of the first cd just where the author and story is going. Many are re-pettish as well as 'full' of 'snow' (like the repeat of the author's theme 20 times a chapter). But, there a some stories that catch you almost immediately and this novel called 'Beautiful Ruins' is one of them.
There was no way 'to put down' this story - so I listened non-stop to the very end. Wonderful!! Thank you Mr. Jess Walter. I must 'read' more of what-ever you've written. I give this novel 4 1/2 stars!! And this is rare from me. Cheers Harold Corbin.
