Teen Spirit was one of the most original books I had read in a long time. The book was filled with plot twists, which always kept you enthralled in the story. This book is a great story of showing how people cope with death, and how it’s best to let go. The foreshadowing in this book was also amazing, I took the time to read it again and all the small details that Block puts in that hint towards the plot to come is amazing. Teen Spirit by Francesca Lia Block was an amazing book, filled with the right amount of romance, fantasy and horror.

I have never read anything by Block before, but I remember seeing good things about her writing. Maybe I would have liked this title better if I was younger? But there were so many adult themes that I'm not sure it would work for an MG novel, but I definitely think it read a little too young to be YA (minus the adult aspects of the book). Strange.

The main character is dealing with grief and loss, as is her best friend. Through a strange paranormal story, they get the answers that they need / want out of life. It has a good life lesson in it, but beyond that, there is little I enjoyed about this book.

There's a lot of play on witchcraft which I'm getting a little bored with in YA. It's not anything new or different, but a same spin on the old. The writing gets a little overly flowery at times, but is for the most part straightforward, which led to pacing issues when Block did turn the writing into something really descriptive.

Additionally, this is more at fault of the editor, there is a section where the MC clearly has her first kiss (lips tingling, mentions being kissed), but then about 13 pages later, says this kiss is actually her first and she has nothing to compare her "first" kiss to. Things like that irk me.

I finished the book in three days, so I guess if you are looking for something light to pass the time, it is worth it. Otherwise, there are so many other novels out there with better payoffs.

Though a small part of this book reminds me of 'The Lovely Bones,' where the ghost wants sex with a human through possession, the Ouija board has a very small but starting point to this book. I love Block's writing, very open-minded about other cultures and things beyond just simple prayer and psychiatry.

"Julie is desperate for one more chance to talk to her beloved grandmother, Miriam. Everything feels wrong since Miriam died and Julie and her mum were forced to start over in a tiny apartment on the shabby side of Beverly Hills. But when Julie and her adorably quirky best friend Clark use a Ouija board to contact Miriam's spirit, they accidentally unleash something dark… and strangely thrilling. With author Francesca Lia Block's distinctive "sweetness spiked with moments of grittiness" (Booklist), this multilayered yet fast-paced read will appeal to fans of character-driven paranormal romance."
