" International superstar Jussi Adler-Olsen, with more than fourteen million copies of his books sold worldwide, delivers his latest in the bestselling Department Q series ? a perplexing cold case with sinister modern-day consequences. In 1987, Nete Hermansen plans revenge on those who abused her in her youth, including Curt Wad, a charismatic surgeon who was part of a movement to sterilize wayward girls in 1950s Denmark. More than twenty years later, Detective Carl ; already has plenty on his mind when he is presented with the case of a brothel owner, a woman named Rita, who went missing in the eighties: New evidence has emerged in the case that destroyed the lives of his two partners-the case that sent Carl to Department Q. But when Carl's assistants, Assad and Rose, learn that numerous other people disappeared around the same weekend as Rita, Carl takes notice. As they sift through the disappearances, they get closer and closer to Curt Wad, who is more determined than ever to see the vision of his youth take hold and whose brutal treatment of Nete and others like her is only one small part of his capacity for evil. I think this is his best to date. The vengeance is a little gory, but otherwise a good easy book with great characters.

I have not hit a clunker in this series yet. This one has some interesting twists and turns while our motley crew of people (can't call them all cops) in Dept Q continue on in their off duty lives. Will Carl finally get divorced from Vigga without going broke? What about Assad's mysterious background and when will Rose reappear as one of her alter egos? Great characters--and I mean characters.

The best in the series so far!
The story is both sad and macabre with a surprise ending!
We get to know both Assad and Rose a little better (fascinating characters) and I look forward to more in this series!
Let's hope Carl remains in Department Q for years to come! A great read!

Jussi Adler-Olsen has done it yet again!! He has created another nail biting page turner that while looking at the very dregs of society can then propel into laughter as humor lightens the load of the heavy and macbre. Very highly recommended but start with the first in the series and work up.

This was a dark story with a great deal of violence and macabre revenge. I found it difficult to read. Although he is a good writer and very imaginative, I will avoid this author because this story is beyond the pale.

I really enjoyed this book and character, typically caught in the extreme ultra-politically correct environment of Denmark while presenting some of its lesser known darker side. Not quite at the far rightwing stance of Sweden (where the International Taxpayers Association [Karl Rove and company] have made enormous strides since the 1980s, when they dumped out the mentally ill onto the streets in Sweden, following Reagan's example in the USA), it still presents and excellent view of modern Denmark. (Has some memorable lines, also.)

unfortunately, his latest is my least favourite. and I've read them all. I hope he goes back to his 'original' mode of writing.

I have really enjoyed this series and was very excited to have this installment.
I found this to be the most emotional of the Department Q books and the themes of overcoming hardship and the difference between neglect and care had a large impact.

Cannot wait for "The Marco Effect" to be translated into English!

A dark, unsolved case from Department Q that leads to many revelations and many more crimes than thought possible. A great story from a wonderful author.
