King Richard , a vain, self-indulgent man who rules with little regard for his people's welfare, is called upon to settle a dispute between his cousin Henry Bolingbroke and Thomas Mowbray. In an act that will spell doom for his reign, he banished both men, and sets into motion a chain of events that will change British history forever.

This newly filmed version of Shakespeare's Richard II includes great acting and photography. The subtitles helped me to forget that I often could not follow the gist of what the characters were saying. If the film is somewhat accurate about the real Richard II, I would suggest that the film indicates what is wrong with the all powerful monarchy form of government. Richard II seems like a man totally unequipped to deal with running a country. No way a country under monarchy is going to always beget princes equipped for the job, decade after decade after decade, etc.

Mesmerizing wonderful performance by Ben Whishaw (Richard II).
