Yep. IMO - There's no doubt about it - Tom Cruise (birth-name - Thomas Mapother IV) is, without question, the absolute, most vacant, shallow, one-dimensional, and unconvincing actors of his generation, bar none.

To be sure - Had all of the carefully choreographed, daredevil flying sequences been edited out of "Top Gun" - Then, yes - This 1986 action movie would've amounted to being absolutely nothing.

'Cause zero-charisma Cruise (and all of his irksome superficiality) certainly couldn't carry this picture and keep things interesting for even a minute.... It's true.

This is one of the all time great movies. It pretty much has what a good movie should have.

Thirty-one years after its release, this is still my favorite Tom Cruise movie. There is a lot of action, of course, but the drama and little bit of comedy are also done well. The cast is very good overall. I just saw the news that Tom Cruise has confirmed a sequel is definitely happening and will likely begin filming in the next year. It seems like a good time to watch it again. Top Gun is rated PG, though it would probably be rated at least PG-13 if released today.

So fast and furious,
So need for speed,
So gone in sixty,
So D-BOX-worthy,
That this film should be illegal 'cause it doesn't come with seatbelts.

And people who quote from its most awesome script should be fined,
And they are at Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada,
Home of the real TOPGUN...
And some Navy SEALs...

This is a 1986 American aviation action drama directed by Tony Scott, inspired by an article titled "Top Guns" published in California magazine three years earlier.
Although the film's pro-military stance isn't so good, you should be able to enjoy this flick if you like air-combat video games.
Since I have a pilot licence, I could enjoy it to the hilt---probably 200 percent.
If you don't have one, you should still be able to enjoy this movie up to 150 percent :-).

I'm sure everyone has already seen this movie and does not need a comment, so I'll just say too much machismo and ego for me.

hey this is a perfect movie for young aviators(civil air patrol cadets etc.) but it DOES contain strong sexual themes and many inappropriate conversations.... but it does have a lot of comedy! love it

Sky high entertainment!

Dogfights, comedy, tragedy, a love story, and even beach volleyball!

Top Gun has it all! The best film of the 80s!

Some come for the awesome aerial photography and '80s soundtrack.
I don't think Top Gun's fanbase would be as large or devoted without the film's themes of courage, friendship, loss, and redemption. Plus you can learn a lot about courtship here.
