An earnest attempt to make the nature of physics (in particular, particle physics, and yes, that bad pun was intentional) more comprehendible falls shy of its mark. It starts off broadly, then rapidly shrinks its focus to dry detailed descriptions of what modern day physicists are trying to accomplish. Even though it tries to summarize such information, prepare for a hard slough through (get some caffeine beforehand). If you do get through, you will definitely broaden your knowledge and understanding of physics (yea!), but don't expect to get invited to more parties with your new scintillating insights.

Very detailed book on the LHC.

Well, throughout reading this tome I kept looking for an oasis to quench my parched mind. Talk about dry! If anyone would have answered the knock at heavens door I would have immediately asked for a glass of water. Didn't need the introductory cracks on religion, why mess with this unless seeking support from Dawkins or Mr. Physics, Bill Clinton. This is not physics for the layman. Actually after a few pages I just hoped I would be illuminated as to how she got the scar on her very shapley leg. I guess I'll need to wait for her next book for the answer to that Higgs Boson mystery.
