An excellent story intertwining Hindu/Indian culture with romance, dark secrets and a young woman's search for the parent she never knew. Her quest takes her from India to the U.S. where she discovers her true reality.

A very well-told story! Many stories going on at the same time that ultimately come together. Lots of detail. Each major character speaks on events from their own point of view, so that you can read a chapter in small chunks and see things from multiple points of view. I read a lot of fiction; this one is very satisfying because it's not watered down or unrealistic. Gives one a feel of what a society is like where women are not equal to men. Highly recommend.

This tale totally captivated me; I could not put it down. I highly recommend it, and will be searching for Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's previous works.
