Disgrace is about so much more than a professors ill-advised affair. Father-daughter relationships, a farmer and her loyalty to her land, neighbors and their power struggles; all are disturbing, yet somehow beautifully rendered.

After the very first line I thought to myself, “Oh no. Not another Coetzee novel about completely vile men and one-dimensional, sexually objectified women…” But I kept going! Hoping to be proven wrong. But very shortly thereafter this line appeared: “…because a woman’s beauty does not belong to her alone, it is part of the bounty she brings into the world. She has a duty to share it.” And stopped.

No. Can’t do it anymore. Nope nope nope. This has been my third attempt to appreciate his characters and story telling, and it will be my last. I simply have no more time or patience for it, especially with the way women are portrayed (every single time).
