Beautiful and charming, Anna lives in a splendid world of her own making. She smokes, rides horseback, plays tennis, takes opium, practices birth control, and--although she is already married--falls in love with a handsome army officer. Anna's life is played out against a backdrop of dazzling balls and the vastness of Russia's landscape.

I was really eagerly anticipating listening to this, and I was rather disappointed. The regal lope of the prose started into a hurried shuffle near the end; there was much that was exceptionally boring - at times I was nearly falling asleep; and the reading was not that good - the voices of the characters was poorly done, and they chose a woman to read it (its written in the third person, and the author was male, so by convention, the reader ought to be male), and perhaps it was also that I listened to this right after listening to George Guidal's reading of Crime And Punishment, so there is an implicit comparison. There is an old saw about writing which says that one should "show, not tell", and in this book there is an overabundance of showing, and overabundance of telling, and often both simultaneously: there is nothing left to think about or imagine... everything is just calmly and authoritatively driven into one's head.

This story, although set in the late 19th century Russia, tells of the trials & triumphs of interpersonal relationships that are true today & every day. Full of hope & devastation all @ the same time. REALLY enjoyed Tolstoy's writing. I would also highly recommend listening to the audio book narrated by David Horovitch. FABULOUS job!

Age recommendation: 16 & up

On a scale of 1 - 10 stars, I give it 9.
