Emma Bovary, the bored wife of a French provincial doctor, scans her solitude with desperate eyes, like a shipwrecked sailor searching for a white sail on the distant horizon. And when Emma's ship finally comes in, it carries with it vast and tragic consequences upon which her own life and the lives of those around her are wrecked.

When I first got to know this novel, it was through the Oxford World Classics edition, and I am confident that they used a different translation for this audiobook (and I think a better one). I found it easier to focus on the main character and her foolishness (when I first read it I paid more attention to the social customs), all she does is marry a man she doesn't love (for the money he has), takes lovers, and borrows and spends until she goes bankrupt, and ultimately ruins the whole family - especially her husband and child - over her fondness for superficial things. The narration is terrific (though the male voices were done poorly).

A beautifully written story about unhappy people doing, unsurprisingly, unhappy things. All the depression and deception simply became too much - I refused to waste any more of my time on this emotionally morbid classic - that a quarter way in I put the book aside, read the Wikipedia plot synopsis, returned to the book and skimmed over the end. Three stars for the wonderful writing.
