On February 23, 1836, a large Mexican army led by dictator Santa Anna reached San Antonio and laid siege to about 175 Texas rebels holed up in the Alamo. The Texans refused to surrender for nearly two weeks until almost 2,000 Mexican troops unleashed a final assault. The defenders fought valiantly-for their lives and for a free and independent Texas-but in the end, they were all slaughtered. Their ultimate sacrifice inspired the rallying cry "Remember the Alamo!" and eventual triumph.

Exhaustively researched, and drawing upon fresh primary sources in U.S. and Mexican archives, THE BLOOD OF HEROES is the definitive account of this epic battle. Populated by larger-than-life characters--including Davy Crockett, James Bowie, William Barret Travis--this is a stirring story of audacity, valor, and redemption.

as a former Texan I was set to dislike this book and read it very critically. I found little to fault and much to praise. It contains many referenced details I had not seen before and is altogether a fine comprehensive, compelling book.

When you think of the battle at the Alamo little attention is given to the events prior to and after the battle. This book provides that information. In fact, the bulk of the book concentrates on those times. It has the effect of making sense of the actual battle. The fight at the Alamo was just part of a greater struggle. As well I was very surprised about the fight at the Alamo itself. The reality, quite unexpectedly, greatly contradicts the Disney version some many have relied on for many years. There are many characters named in this book so it can be somewhat cloudy at times when trying to remember who was doing what. Overall though if you want to read only one book on this subject you will find this one satisfying.

A very well written account of events and the people connected to the fall of the Alamo. Also gives some insight into the lives of the settlers as well as the Mexican soldiers involved. A great account of a stand by some very heroic people. I enjoyed it.

An amazingly well-written account of the whole War of Texas Independence, this recounts not just the story of the Alamo, but the causes of the war and events occurring both before and after the massacre. Rich in detail, well-researched, but still entertaining and very easy to read. Highly recommended by me.
