The King Is Dead

Average Rating: 4 stars out of 5.
The King Is Dead
"The album--a set of 10 concise, country-based songs--marks a deliberate turn towards simplicity after the band's wildly ambitious and widely acclaimed 2009 song-cycle The Hazards of Love. Produced once again by Tucker Martine, The King Is Dead features special guest appearances by Americana luminary Gillian Welch on seven tracks and legendary R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck on three tracks."

The most unexpected thing the Decemberists could have possibly done was release a normal album. Well, they just did the unexpected. This album is straightforward, unambitious and unfailingly pleasant on the ears. It's not their most exciting album, but it's a good one and proves their versatility as a band.

Excellent music that defies genre labels. This album has less storytelling, more feeling. Looking forward to their new release in 2015.

I'm glad to see The Decemberists have retained their rich sound with the newest release, and I'm also happy they've decided to drop the sea shanty songs which I always found slightly corny. In my opionion, this album is a real step up for the band.

With lyrics such as "panoply of song," "the summer swells anon," and "yellow bonnets garland all the lawn," I am immersed in pleasant reverie each time I listen to The Decemberists. Excellent prose and gifted musicians!!!

What a great album. I've never listened to this band before but this album is one of the best reviewed discs of the year so I gave it a try and loved it. Extremely catchy and beautiful songs. Reminded me of the best of Blue Rodeo or even The Band. Some similarities to the Jayhawks too. The music is a combination of Alt-Country, folk, and rock. I could listen to this over and over.

Nothing special. OK tunes, nice production. Just nothing really stands out. Preferred their more ambitious earlier releases.

Perfect "singing in your car" music.
