This is my favorite novel, and despite its problematic issues (such as rape being spoken about in the book) I would recommend it to others.

Bit confusing, in that it flashes back and forth in time, but themes of privacy (the author's "my Grandfather" the only way she ever refers to him, who goes off on his own as he was dying), medical work, domestic violence, gossip, handicaps (deafness of the "tiger's wife"), isolation, and fantasy (The Deathless Man) whirl around in this book about an area of the world during several wars. town's name was Galena.

A story that entices you in and then keeps feeding you with layered characters and mysteries, some of which will be explained. Looking forward to her next book.
