What a unique and interesting tale! Gender, sex, sexuality, race - all of these topics and more are tackled with beautiful language and emotional connection. I fell in love with the Peace family and felt tears of both sorrow and joy with them.

One of the best books read in a while! First time reading Daniel Black and I enjoyed it. I like the "south" style and was a very good story.

A really intense read. I loved it. It's mother wit is matched by Mr. Black's ear for Southern-speak. I howled with laughter at times, and a few pages later my eyes filled with tears. Pathos to spare. The dialogue (very theatrical really; I can see actors taking on some sections in scene-study class) is down-home real. One can almost smell the sweet potato pie baking in the oven or hear the cicadas on a hot windless day. Well done.

Brilliant concept that was let down by a less than deft writer. If the characters had been better developed (show me, don't tell me), this book could have been truly brilliant.
