Whereas the French film ‘Marie Curie et la lumiere bleue’ depicts the Curies as a happy and well-adjusted—‘normal’ is the wrong word—this 1943 classic is more endearing. Marie and Pierre are shown as gentle and unworldly, maybe a trifle self-absorbed, but the sort of people one would want to move in next door. I was going to conjure a suburban landscape crowded with scientist-philosophers contemplating the stars and challenging accepted notions, but that is too bizarre even for me. A beautifully made film in every way, at once touching and inspiring.

Old-fashioned and well-acted movie of two people who were not only scientists engaged in pursuing new discoveries, but also partners/collaborators who created a family long before our current society's arguments over work/life balance. There's an endearingly awkward scene when--after getting over the shock of sharing his lab with *gasp* a woman--the very introverted Pierre Curie gives her a copy of his recently published study, then shyly persists in getting her attention that, Mademoiselle, it's personally inscribed to her: "...respect and friendship". Their grueling, physical work (4+ years) of isolating radium in a ramshackle university shed is also well-portrayed.

The true story of Madame Curie. It stars Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. They would make 9 movies together due to their popularity. As in the other movies, they are husband and wife. Madame Curie was Polish and did not come from a wealthy family. Greer Garson handles this part flawlessly. Walter Pidgeon plays Pierre Curie, a professor and later Madame's husband. A very inspiring movie that teaches all of us that we can make a difference in the world!
