Take whatever old conventions and standard stereotypes that one might have about Shakespeare and put that all aside. This film is a compelling example of psychological horror that puts on screen the same sort of foreboding dread that one can see in the likes of the 'Silence of the Lambs' and other classic movies. Patrick Stewart gives Macbeth a combination of genuine charm and ever-growing malice that fits perfectly with the play's broader theme of dangerous ambition carrying the seeds of its own destruction. Lady Macbeth's steely determination shines through in another powerful performance as well.
Set almost entirely in an underground bunker system that gives the feeling of a seething underground wasteland, the movie's few instances of cinematography filmed outside contain the same kind of dramatic darkness that keeps the sinister mood alive. Rather than being a distraction from the strong character performances, the many elements taking influence from the 20th century such as electronic spying and propaganda iconography only serve to heighten the tensions. The viewer will constantly recall how both WWI and WWII made a mockery of the supposed glory of battle and fighting. While some moments do you drag a bit, this fantastic adaptation is well worth watching.
A bloody and brutal adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Dark and highly stylized, with some quality performances.
"Macbeth" meets "The Hurt Locker", operatic acting, earnest enunciation, measured articulation, everything way over the top
Wow.... Talk about doing it right. I love it when Shakespeare is updated correctly. (hated the Romeo and Juliet but loved Hamlet with Ethan Hawke) This version is part My Chemical Romance meets nine inch nails video and part amazing acting on all players parts. But mostly it's 100% terrifying. I love me the horror, and the classics and this is the best of both worlds. Truly the scariest Shakespeare you will watch... i love it!
Until now, I had only read the play, never seen it on stage or screen before. It is chilling and terrifying. The actors are all fantastic. This BBC/PBS version may have been made for television but the quality is so good, I would have paid to see it on the big screen.
