A naive army private is assigned to assist a blinded, embittered ex-army captain on his journey from Turin to Naples. The captain is rude and eccentric, prone to say and do the unexpected. Their hilarious yet heartrending misadventures with prostitutes, clerics, and others they encounter along the way bring these odd companions to a deeper understanding of each other and their own shortcomings.

Gazman y FidelCastro me lucen parecidos en el fisico, especialmente la mirada. Que horror!

Two stars? Come on! This Italian film from 1974 was famously remade as "Scent of a Woman" and won Al Pacino an undeserved Oscar (I think he's a great actor, but not in that movie.) for pretending to be blind and yelling a lot. "Profumo di Donna" is more understated, darker, and more poignant, with Vittoria Gassman's blind man just as difficult as Pacino's, but more sympathetic. Those looking for the celebrated dance sequence will be disappointed, those looking for a better movie will not be. Star Gassman and writer-director Dino Risi collaborated many times, most notably on the comedic road trip/buddy comedy "Il Sorpasso," recently released on DVD by Criterion.

Pacino had to add several more layers to this character and succeeded remarkably in making him more worldly. I felt he also intended to pay tribute to Gassman since he adopted so many of his little ticks and traits for the American version. I don't think many people know Scent of a Woman was based on this -when I found out I was surprised in a good way. Compared to the Colonel Pacino breathed life into, Gassman's character is much less formal yet still larger than life.

It is the original version vs the remake called Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino. The remake presented a more complex character vs a bitter one.
